On our big trip to the Quilotoa Crater, we decided to take the path less traveled. Most tourists hike down to the crater lake and take donkeys back up the steep trail. It is always crowded. Our family chose the longer, 11 kilometer hike around the crater rim. We probably hiked up and down as much as those going down to the lake but did it constantly along the entire trail. The colors of the lake change around every corner and the views of the surrounding countryside were spectacular. This photo is of the highest point along the crater rim and the two figures in the distance are my fast-hiking sons.
