This is a female Star of Chimborazo Hummingbird seen at the high mountain lodge of the same name, Estrella de Chimborazo Lodge. A small ravine runs in between the rooms and the main lodge. It is bordered with brightly colored orange flowers called Chuquirahua, which means “tip of the candle” in Quichua. These flowers attract the hummingbirds, especially in the late afternoon. A friend and I sat ourselves down on one side of the ravine with a good view of some of the brightest flowers on the other. We had hopes of capturing a male hummingbird coming to feed but had to be content with this lovely female instead.
