Tucked into the lush foothills of the Ecuadorian Andes, where the mountains begin to give way to the Amazon, Rio Quijos EcoLodge is more than a place to sleep. This boutique lodge offers a chance to truly connect with nature whether along the wild Quijos River with its torrent ducks, within the vibrant secondary forest alive with orchids, or simply on the back patio admiring hummingbirds.
Scott and I know this lodge from years back, when we first lived in Quito, Ecuador. The lodge has seen some updates yet retains the essential coziness and hospitality that welcomed us on our very first visit. I’ve sent clients, accompanied a tour group, and come back on my own. Rio Quijos EcoLodge is definitely on our short list of best places to stay on the Andean East Slope.
Whether you’re a birder in search of rare species, a photographer craving vibrant images, or simply someone longing for a deeper connection with the natural world, Rio Quijos delivers every time. Here are nine unforgettable ways this special lodge brings you closer to nature.

1. Birdwatching Over Breakfast
There’s nothing quite like greeting the day with the flutter of wings and the aroma of freshly brewed coffee. At Rio Quijos EcoLodge, breakfast is served in an open-air dining room that looks out over a garden backed by forest. The birdlife is amazing.
Feeders attract a colorful array: the striking Andean Motmot, bold Green Jays, Russet-backed Oropendolas, and Scarlet-rumped Cacique. On lucky mornings, you might even glimpse a Crested Quetzal perched among the trees… listen for its distinctive call.

2. A Hummingbird Haven
Rio Quijos is a true hummingbird paradise, with feeders positioned to give guests endless photo opportunities and close encounters with an amazing variety of species.
Favorites include the dazzling Peruvian Racket-tail, famous for its whimsical “cottonball” socks and long tails ending in wide, racket-shaped feathers, as well as the Green-backed Hillstar, Violet-fronted Brilliant, and Gorgeted Woodstar. Most days, from dawn to dusk, the sugar feeders are alive with action, as hummingbirds often fight each other for access.

3. Orchids Everywhere
Anyone reading our blog knows that I love a good orchid. Rio Quijos EcoLodge is alive with stunning examples from tiny orchids barely the size of smallest fingernail to varieties akin to a supermarket orchid. These flowers dot the property, adding splashes of color just outside your door. But the real adventure lies on the trails, where even more orchids cling to tree trunks and hide among mossy branches.
Not sure where to look? The friendly staff will happily share their favorite spots.

4. Guided By A Passionate Naturalist
What makes Rio Quijos EcoLodge truly special is the people who share it with you. Owner Ángel and his team of local guides are nature enthusiasts eager to help you experience the wonders of this region. Need help spotting a rare orchid? Want to photograph a specific hummingbird? Just ask.
Their deep local knowledge transforms a simple visit into a discovery-filled adventure, connecting you more deeply with the landscapes, plants, and wildlife around you.

5. Trails Through Secondary Forest
Step outside your door, and you’ll find an inviting network of trails winding through lush, green secondary forest. These paths are alive with possibility—listen for the haunting calls of distant birds, watch for a flash of color as tanagers dart through the canopy, and take time to notice the intricate patterns of fungi and orchids clinging to mossy trunks.
Whether you prefer a gentle morning stroll or a more adventurous hike, the trails at Rio Quijos offer a chance to slow down and truly immerse yourself in this thriving ecosystem.

6. The River: Serenity AND Adventure
The Quijos River is the lifeblood of this region—and a constant companion during your stay. From the lodge, it’s a short walk down to the water’s edge, where you can enjoy serene mornings watching the mist rise and birds like the Black Phoebe or Spotted Sandpiper hunt along the shore.
For the more adventurous, the river offers a refreshing plunge after a day of exploring. If the conditions are right, it’s even possible to arrange whitewater rafting, turning this peaceful waterway into an adrenaline-filled playground.

7. Night Hikes Full of Fascination
When darkness falls, a different world awakens. At Rio Quijos EcoLodge, night hikes reveal the rainforest’s secret nightlife—creatures that most visitors never get the chance to see. Armed with a flashlight and a sense of wonder, you’ll encounter jewel-toned frogs, stealthy lizards, and spiders spinning their intricate webs.
On one memorable hike, we even spotted a poisonous caterpillar—proof that in the rainforest, surprises are always just a step away. These nocturnal adventures are an unforgettable way to experience the forest’s vibrant energy after sunset.

8. Wildlife Photography, Especially After Dark
If you’re passionate about photography, these night walks are pure magic. The rainforest becomes a living gallery of subjects—frogs with shimmering green skin, translucent insects perched on leaves, and spiders that glint like polished stone under the beam of your light.
With today’s cellphones (I used a Google Pixel) capturing these moments is easier than ever. It’s a great way to introduce kids to wildlife photography and spark curiousity about the natural world.

9. Gateway to Birding Hotspots
As incredible as the lodge itself is, its location makes it a perfect hub for visiting nearby birding projects and conservation sites. Places like Templo del Búho, La Vida del Kinde, Concierto de las Aves, and El Renacer de las Aves are all within easy reach.
Even if these spots don’t offer overnight accommodations, staying at Rio Quijos means you can visit them comfortably—expanding your bird list and supporting important local conservation efforts in the process.
Rio Quijos EcoLodge is more than a place to stay
Rio Quijos Ecolodge offers an invitation to slow down, unplug, and immerse yourself in one of the most biodiverse regions on Earth. From hummingbirds and orchids to rivers and night hikes, every moment here is a reminder of nature’s power to surprise and inspire.
All that’s left is to start planning your adventure!
