To really explore Cotopaxi National Park, it is worth hiking to the base of the glacier. Currently, the trail to the Refugio is open and it is unclear if anyone is hiking further with explicit permission. This photo was taken pre-eruption. While I did not hike on the ice, I approached close enough to take pictures of those who did. Many hiked up with no problems but realized on the return trip that hiking down without the appropriate crampons was a big mistake. Many people slipped and slid down the icy face. I love this photo because the clouds in the background were attempting to reach over the mountain top and provide great perspective.
